The makers have confirmed that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will debut globally on December 12, 2025, as announced at a recent event. The teaser footage signals a darker twist for the franchise, Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, the world’s most dapper detective, ominously intones “the impossible crime,” with eerie church imagery hinting at grave stakes. In voice-over Blanc warns this will be “his most dangerous case yet”, confirming fans can expect a high-stakes new mystery from writer-director Rian Johnson. This third film, written and directed by Rian Johnson (who helmed the first two, Knives Out and Glass Onion), reunites Blanc with an all-new cast of suspects.

The ensemble includes Daniel Craig alongside Kerry Washington, Josh Brolin, Cailee Spaeny, Josh O’Connor, Mila Kunis, Andrew Scott and Glenn Close; Jeremy Renner, Thomas Haden Church and Daryl McCormack also join the fray.

Johnson tells Tudum he’s assembled a “murderers’ row” of talent – “some of [his] favourite actors on the planet, and that’s absolutely the case here”, promising plenty of sharp performances and chemistry.

The Knives Out franchise itself is already a proven hit, the first film (2019) and its sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) earned critical praise and a devoted following. Both prior films are now streaming on Netflix, and the streamer even struck a two-picture deal with Johnson after Knives Out’s success. In Wake Up Dead Man, Blanc finds himself in a brand-new murder puzzle, “in an as-yet-undisclosed setting” surrounded by colourful suspects.

While plot details remain under wraps, the ominous trailer suggests Johnson is taking his trademark wit into a noir-ish, Gothic direction “ventur[ing] into a darker tone unlike anything seen in the previous films”. Johnson’s own enthusiasm bodes well for fans, he’s said he “loves everything about whodunnits” and relishes the genre’s flexibility. As he wrote on social media, exploring the mystery genre’s “whole tonal spectrum” is “one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies”.

In other words, viewers can expect the clever twists and playful humour that made the earlier films so engaging, even as Blanc tackles what looks to be his most perilous case yet.

Filming took place in London, with Glenn Close describing the experience as one of the best of her life, praising Johnson’s direction and the ensemble cast. As anticipation builds, fans can look forward to a thrilling and darker addition to the Knives Out series this December.
