With just hours to go before Thug Life hits screens worldwide, Raaj Kamal Films International has stoked excitement by dropping a new behind-the-scenes promo that peels back the curtain on Mani Ratnam’s action-packed underworld saga. The 1.45-minute video, released on Wednesday, delivers charged snapshots of the film’s core characters, stunning set pieces, and its leading man Kamal Haasan in various transformative looks.

The video showcases Haasan in multiple shades — from a rugged long-haired warrior seen grappling with foes to a younger, leaner version of his character — building further intrigue about the film’s timeline and tone. Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Joju George, Abhirami, and others flash across the screen in brisk cuts, hinting at an ensemble drama shaped by power, betrayal, and bloodshed.

Co-produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies, Thug Life reunites Haasan and Ratnam after nearly four decades, following their legendary collaboration in Nayakan. The latest BTS drop — high on mood and movement — sets up Thug Life as more than just a star vehicle. It hints at a sprawling, visceral cinematic world with AR Rahman’s soundtrack and Ravi K Chandran’s gritty visuals playing key roles in the storytelling.

Karnataka Controversy Lingers, Release Uncertain
Even as fanfare builds around the film, Thug Life continues to face turbulence in Karnataka following Kamal Haasan’s contentious remarks on the Kannada language. While the actor offered a clarification, his refusal to apologise has led to a temporary stall in the film’s release across the state. The matter is now under legal and political scrutiny, with the Karnataka High Court also weighing in.
Tamil Nadu Ramps Up Screenings Amid High Demand
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has embraced the film with enthusiasm. The state government has approved special early-morning and late-night screenings on opening day, allowing five shows across theatres — a nod to both overwhelming interest and a proactive anti-piracy stance.

Despite the regional hiccup, trade experts remain optimistic about Thug Life’s pan-Indian performance, especially with the multilingual release in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi primed for mass appeal.
