WA GreenTech Hub Launches, Backed By $4 Million To Power Clean Energy Innovation
Western Australia’s ambitions to become a leader in green innovation gained new momentum this week with the formal launch of the GreenTech Hub. Based at Curtin University, the facility has a straightforward mission: build local capability in clean technology, accelerate industry collaboration, and help WA move more rapidly towards a low-carbon economy.
The Hub’s arrival is the product of growing pressure for solutions to some of the state’s most urgent energy and climate challenges. With its standalone model, the GreenTech Hub is set to serve as a meeting ground for government, industry, researchers, and the broader community. Its core activities will include a series of innovation challenges and the established Curtin Accelerate Program, both designed to help new ideas reach commercial scale.
The first of these challenges will focus on advanced energy storage — an area that could fundamentally change how Western Australia powers its homes, businesses, and remote communities.
“Successfully developing advanced energy storage systems could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and provide alternative power solutions, particularly in remote areas, while also creating a new energy industry,” said Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.
The project is part of a four-year, $40 million Lower Carbon Grants Program and GreenTech Hub funding agreement between the State Government and the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project. Of that, $4 million has been allocated specifically to support the Hub’s operations and programs over the next four years.
Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson said, “The Cook Government welcomes the launch of this facility as we take another step in WA’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable and resilient economy.”
“Our State has extraordinary natural advantages from solar and wind to critical minerals and advanced logistics.”
“The GreenTech Hub is set to connect innovative solutions to challenges, linking unique WA contexts with global markets and innovation pathways.”
